The Signal #5: Google AI Mode Ads Now Follow the Conversation

Yesterday, on Alphabet's earnings call, Google said it is launching multiturn ads in the United States. Google AI Mode ads used to show up around the first question someone asked. Now they can show up on the follow-up questions too, deep inside the conversation, labeled "Sponsored." If you pay for Google Ads in Tampa Bay, your ads are already eligible to show there, whether you planned for it or not. This is The Signal: one story a week, picked for what it changes for a Tampa Bay business.

Search is turning into a conversation. The ads are following it in.

What's happening

On October 28, Google's chief business officer Philipp Schindler told investors the company is "scaling high-quality ads within AI overviews in AI mode to more users and queries." Two moves came with that, according to TechCrunch's report on the call and Google's Ads & Commerce announcement.

Multiturn ads, U.S. first. AI Mode is the chat-style tab in Google Search. You ask a question, get an answer, then keep asking. Until now, ads were tied to that first question. Multiturn ads can appear on the answers to follow-up questions as the conversation goes on. They're labeled "Sponsored."

Ten more countries. Ads in AI Mode expand to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico, and the U.K. slated for Q4. For a Florida business, the U.S. change is the one that matters.

Why Google is doing it. Google Search revenue grew 12% year over year last quarter, down from 17% in Q2, per TechCrunch. Schindler said strong growth in AI Mode queries "had an impact" [VERIFY quote against call transcript], and an AI answer carries fewer ad slots than a classic results page. More ads in more turns is how Google closes that gap.

3x: how much longer AI Mode queries run, on average, than traditional Google searches, per Google CEO Sundar Pichai on the Q3 call.

You don't sign up for this. Per coverage of Google's help documentation, existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically. No new campaign, no new budget. It's the same auction and the same bidding as regular search ads. Broad match and AI Max for Search can be matched to the conversation as a whole. Exact and phrase match only trigger when the question itself shows clear buying intent. [VERIFY: eligibility rules against Google Ads Help, answer 18826097]

You can't split it out, either. Coverage of the same documentation says advertisers can't target AI Mode separately or opt out of it apart from Search. Queries show up in aggregate in your search terms report. Google may also put its own AI-written explainer next to your ad, and you can't edit or approve it. Why Google AI Mode ads matter for a Tampa Bay business

A classic search is three words. "Pool service Clearwater." You bid on that, you show up, they click or they don't.

An AI Mode conversation is different. Someone in Clearwater types: "Why is my pool turning green after the storm?" Google answers. They follow up: "Is it cheaper to treat it myself or hire someone?" Then: "Who does weekly service near me and what does it cost?"

By the third question, that person is ready to buy. That's the turn where a multiturn ad can now show. That's a real opening for a local service business. It's also a real risk, because you didn't write that conversation. Google's AI did.

Your ad can now show up in a conversation you never saw. Budget like it.

Here's who should look closely:

You run broad match or Performance Max. Those are the settings with the widest reach into AI Mode. If your account manager set them up and moved on, your ads may be showing on long, rambling questions that look nothing like the keywords you picked.

You sell a service with a long consideration phase. HVAC in Brandon. Roofing after storm season. Med spas, law offices, home remodelers. People research these in long back-and-forths. That's where follow-up ads live.

You judge Google Ads by gut feel. If you can't tell which calls and form fills came from an ad, you won't be able to tell whether AI Mode traffic is paying off or quietly burning budget.

I spent years inside financial systems at places like JPMorgan Chase. One rule held everywhere: you don't fund a channel you can't measure. AI Mode is a new channel sitting inside an old line item. Most owners will see one Google Ads bill and never know the mix changed.

The flip side: paid is only half of it. The AI answer that surrounds the ad pulls from websites it can read and trust. We wrote about where this is heading in The Signal #2 on AI agents becoming your customers. And if you're weighing what to spend on any of this, our breakdown of what AI implementation really costs a small business lays out where the money goes.

3 Moves This Week

  1. Pull your search terms report and read it like a customer. Open Google Ads, go to the search terms for the last 30 days, and sort by cost. Look for long, question-style searches. Those are the AI-era queries. Flag anything you'd never want to pay for, like "how to do it myself" or jobs you don't take, and add those as negative keywords. Do it again in two weeks, since multiturn ads are rolling out now.
  2. Make sure every lead is tracked back to its source. Confirm call tracking and form conversions are firing in Google Ads, and that each conversion is a real lead, not a page view. Write down this month's cost per lead today. That's your baseline. In 30 days, compare. If cost per lead climbs and lead quality drops, tighten match types or campaign settings.
  3. Fix the landing page the AI and the customer both see. A follow-up question is specific. "Weekly pool service in Clearwater, what does it cost?" Your ad's landing page should answer that in the first screen: service area, a price range or how pricing works, and a one-tap way to call or text. Write plain answers to the 5 questions customers ask most, right on the page. That helps the ad convert and gives Google's AI something clear to read.

Google will keep moving ads into the conversation. That's where the queries are going. The owners who win this won't be the ones who spend the most. They'll be the ones who know which questions their money is answering.

Know where your ads show. Know what each lead costs.
